Heavy Menstrual Periods

Heavy menstrual periods can be very disabling and cause fatigue and anemia. Some women only wear black pants during their period in case they have an “accident”. At Gynecology and Infertility Associates, we try to determine the cause of the bleeding and then let the patient decide how she wishes to proceed. Heavy periods can be caused by anovulatory bleeding, uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, or even gynecologic cancers. Workup can include an endometrial biopsy, a PAP smear or an ultrasound with a sonohysterogram depending on the patient’s circumstances. We try to treat with the most minimally invasive technologies. Treatment usually begins with expectant management, birth control pills, the Mirena IUD or endometrial ablation.
