After a woman is told she has an abnormal PAP smear she is often quite nervous and fearful. Luckily, this is almost always easily treatable. Often a woman undergoes colposcopy (see Colposcopy under Specialty Procedures). The biopsy results determine whether a woman can be followed conservatively with follow up PAP's or whether she needs further treatment such as LEEP (see LEEP under Specialty Procedures). We follow PAP's closely until a woman has had three normal PAP's in a row before returning to yearly PAP smears.
